This is beautiful! I'm so glad you're writing again. We met once at a conference a long time ago, but as a St Mary's grad who spent a lot of time at the CSC in the 90's, I feel like you could be a kindred spirit. I

n these dark times, alongside my sadness and wondering how we can honor human dignity, truth, and liberalism, I've found solace in taking up pottery as a hobby. Spending time at the wheel has been so goo for my soul, even if the bowls and mugs I make are far from perfect.

That’s wonderful. I remember you. I think pottery is a great practice. Anything that gets your mind and body in the same place at the same time.

This is an excellent essay, Anna. Have you considered writing for The Free Press, co-founded by Bari Weiss? It’s become my primary “go-to” for balanced, open-minded, and intelligent commentary on what’s going on in our country, and the world. I suspect you’d be a good fit. They share your classical liberal commitment to freedom of speech and expression, and human rights.

That's very kind. Yes, I do subscribe to The Free Press. I also enjoy Andrew Sullivan's The Daily Dish, The Atlantic etc. I also subscribe to newspapers. Important to pay real journalists and smart writers in these times, I think. Thanks for reading.

Love the title of your Substack title, too! Inner Emigre. A great concept. May I ask how you came to choose it?

Thanks Ken. It just felt apt. I'm pretty sure I first read about inner emigres in a New York Review of Books article was about people living under authoritarian regimes and dissenting in their own homes but perhaps not publicly out of fear.
